Nawah receives operating license for Unit 3 of Barakah Plant

21 Jun 2022

Nawah Energy Company, the operations and maintenance subsidiary of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), is pleased to confirm that it has received the Operating License for Unit 2 of Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant from the UAE’s independent nuclear regulator, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).

The Operating License was approved by the FANR Board of Directors on 17 June 2022, following rigorous assessments and independent reviews of Nawah’s operational readiness, including the successful completion of a Pre-start Up Review (PSUR) by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).

The next step will be to start loading the fuel assemblies into the reactor of Unit 3, in preparation for start-up of the Unit later this year.

To date, FANR has conducted 520 independent inspections since the start of the Barakah Plant’s development. These reviews were conducted alongside more than 44 assessments and peer reviews by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and WANO.
